The user guide does not explain very much about Hypermemories. This section attempts to explain what they are and how to set them. The differences between Hypermemories in the FT-7900, FT-8800 and FT-8900 are also explained.
What is a Hypermemory?
A Hypermemory is badly named because it is nothing like a conventional frequency memory. It is a snapshot of the state of the rig. Information in the snapshot includes (not an exhaustive list):
state of the VFOs for each band
current VFO(s) (including power level per band)
operating mode of the rig - VFO/memory/mtune/scanning etc
auto repeater shift state
current set menu number and sub-menu
current bank number (not FT-8900)
current memory number
bank scan linking information (not FT-8800 nor FT-8900)
Scanning related flags for each conventional memory in the FT-7900 and FT-8800 are also stored, with unique settings per hypermemory. This means you can scan different subsets of the same bank depending on the hypermemory number chosen.
scan/skip flag for each memory (not FT-8900)
preferential memory scan flag for each memory (not FT-8900)
The FT-7900 has 5 hypermemories; the FT-8800 and FT-8900 have 6 hypermemories.
One of the hypermemories is always active. After a reset of the rig it is hypermemory 1, and after that it is the last one you selected.
When you power on the rig a brief display of the active number is shown e.g. 4-HP.
When is a Hypermemory updated?
When the snapshot of values is taken depends on the setting of the HYPER item in the Set Mode menu. The FT-7900 menu number is 17, the FT-8800 menu number is 16, the FT-8900 menu number is 16. Possible values are:
FT-7900 MANUAL, 1-AUTO, AUTO
FT-8800 MANUAL, AUTO
FT-8900 MANUAL, AUTO
MANUAL means that the snapshot is taken when you decide to do so. This enables you to guarantee resetting to specific values when you select a hypermemory.
AUTO means that the snapshot of the current hypermemory is automatically updated as changes occur to any of the items in the snapshot.
1-AUTO means that if the current hypermemory is number 1 then AUTO updating takes place, else MANUAL updating is required.
How is a Hypermemory updated?
If the hypermemory is set to AUTO then any change you make to items included in the snapshot is automatically updated as you use the radio. This can lead to unexpected results if you thought re-calling the settings would go to specific values.
If the hypermemory is set to MANUAL then you decide when to update it. This is done by pressing in and holding the button for the hypermemory you wish to update. The button must be held in for some time - there is an initial short beep followed by a pause, three more short beeps, then a final longer beep of higher frequency. If you release the button before the final beep then the hypermemory is not updated.
