Connection to the transceiver

The transceiver should be connected to the computer in accordance with the rig's operating instruction manual. The appropriate connecting lead must be used.   The Links page of the website lists sources of ready-made cables that can be ordered over the Internet.

If your cable includes a level converter circuit you must find out how it is powered. The Yaesu CT-62 cable is powered from the radio but others draw power from the serial port. If your cable that draws power from the serial port then you must 'tick' either or both of the commands Raise DRT and Raise RTS on the Options menu.

Cables

If you have a FT-847 or VR-5000 you need a null modem cable with a female connector at the rig end.

Assuming plug A to be the rig end of the cable:

plug A pin 2 connected to plug B pin 3
plug A pin 3 connected to plug B pin 2
plug A pin 5 connected to plug B system ground (pin 5 for a 9 pin plug, or pin 7 for a 25 pin plug).

If you have a FT-450, FT-920 or FT-1000MP Mark V you need a straight serial cable. The FT-920 needs a male 9-pin connector, the FT-1000MP Mark V needs a female 9-pin connector.

Assuming plug A to be the rig end of the cable:

plug A pin 2 connected to plug B pin 2
plug A pin 3 connected to plug B pin 3
plug A pin 5 connected to plug B system ground (pin 5 for a 9 pin plug, or pin 7 for a 25 pin plug).

If you have a FT-897/D, FT-857/D, FT-817/ND or FRG-100 you need a TTL to RS232 level converter.

The Yaesu cable for FT-897/D, FT-857/D and FT-817/ND is a CT-62 but there are many designs for DIY.
If you are not up to soldering neatly, just buy a ready made cable.

COM port and speed

Selection of Com port number and speed is done using the Settings screen. The following table shows the speed combinations available for CAT control. For serial communication the Yaesu manuals specify 1 start bit, 8 bits per byte, 2 stop bits, and no parity.

Rig  Speed

FT-450  4800, 9600, 19200, 38400
FT-1000MP 4800
FT-817/ND 4800, 9600, 38400
FT-847  4800, 9600, 57600
FT-857/D  4800, 9600, 38400
FT-897/D  4800, 9600, 38400
FRG-100  4800
VR-5000  4800, 9600 (57600 should work but does not)

Only the FT-847 allows you to select a cloning speed - either 9600 or 57600. The other rigs all have fixed clone speeds.

FT-847 and the FC-20 tuner.

One of the problems with the FT-847 is the inability to use both the CAT and FC-20 tuner at the same time. A work-around by Peter DH1NGP is as follows, and assumes you are running the serial link at 57,600 baud:

1. Connect your FC-20 to the FT-847 transceiver.
2. Connect the computer to the FT-847 using the nullmodem serial cable.
3. Go to the internal transceiver menu and switch the cat interface speed to 9600 baud.
4. Leave the menu.
5. Again go to the menu and change the speed back to 57600 baud.

From now on you are able to use both rig control program and your FC-20 tuner at the same time.
