Connection to the receiver

The receiver should be connected to the computer using a null modem cable.

Cables

The null modem cable requires the following pin connections.

Assuming plug A to be the rig end of the cable:

plug A pin 2 connected to plug B pin 3
plug A pin 3 connected to plug B pin 2
plug A pin 5 connected to plug B system ground (pin 5 for a 9 pin plug, or pin 7 for a 25 pin plug).

If you are not up to soldering neatly, just buy a ready made null modem cable.

COM port and speed

Selection of Com port number and speed is done using the Settings menu. The program will remember the selections you make for the next time you run.

Do make sure you set the rig Com speed to the same as the program by using the following procedure:

Press the [F] key momentarily, then the [ENT(SET)] key
Rotate the tuning dial anti-clockwise until the arrow points to MISC
Press the [ENT(SET)] key once
Rotate the tuning dial anti-clockwise until the arrow points to CAT RATE
Press the [ENT(SET)] key once
Rotate the tuning dial until the arrow points to the desired speed (9600 recommended)
Press the [ENT(SET)] key once
Rotate the tuning dial until the arrow points to END
Press the [ENT(SET)] key once
Ensure the arrow points to WRITE
Press the [ENT(SET)] key once

Although the rig has a speed setting of 57600 I have never been able to make it work.

Note that if you do a RESET of the VR-5000 it will revert to its default speed of 4800 baud. You will have to change it back to 9600 baud if that is your normal operating speed.
